“¿Agregamos malicia?“ pregunto

“Yo paso” me responde

Me aventuro.

“Cebe otro mate. Escuche…”

One of my favorite places to visit as a child was the “Instituto de la Patagonia” I remember my grandpa used to take me there to see the machines that shaped the early way of living in my city. I can also recall a cartoon that was on tv those days: the transformers. It was in this place where my imagination hoped that one of those ancient gadgets would transform into a robot and go home with me.

Now I am 29 years old and it is me who drives my grandpa around town, only that whenever we go to the institute I am mature enough to understand all the stores behind the iron and rust.

This open air museum was founded in 1969 and it has the purpose of studying and preserving the history of the 12th region of Chile. It has the biggest collection of machinery that goes from late 1800′s until mid 1900′s. In addition there are replicas of stores and a drugstore with most of their original objects.

Instituto Patagonia

This window into time can be sometimes difficult to explore since it is not protected from the elements. My advice is that you take a rain coat and you remember the layer theory just in case. Though I have to say that a visit to the institute is far more insightful when it is windy and cold because only then you discover what is like to work in Patagonia.

At the entrance you will have to pay an entrance fee that varies, but shouldn’t be more than U$ 10. It will probably take you 1 hour to walk around the whole museum.

Just one more thing: should you see a robot, send me a mail ASAP, because I still haven’t found mine.

How to get here?

Just ask for: Instituto de la Patagonia

Avenida Bulnes 01855

Punta Arenas, Chile

Tips to enjoy nature in Patagonia 1: 1. Climate: there is an element here in Patagonia that defines everything that dwells within this area. From the numerous guanacos that roam the pampas, to the hardworking ovejero, we all find out about the endless and punishing wind. The unique geographical location of this region creates a vortex where nature unleashes all its glory. Therefore it will be wise to be prepared to face the magic of 4 seasons in one day. This means that even in a rainy day, as long as you keep both your eyes and mind open, there will be discoveries to enjoy behind every hill… My apology if this sounds a bit too scary. Weather here is not a dreadful phenomenon. Yet, keep in mind that “every dark cloud has a silver lightning” 2. Thorny Bushes: a lot of the bushes here look like cushions.

Tips to enjoy nature in Patagonia 1:

Cloudy day

1. This means that even in a rainy day, as long as you keep both your eyes and mind open, there will be discoveries to enjoy behind every hill…

My apology if this sounds a bit too scary. Weather here is not a dreadful phenomenon. Yet, keep in mind that “every dark cloud has a silver lightning”

2. Thorny Bushes: a lot of the bushes here look like cushions. But appearances can be deceiving. Even though you are told to stay on the path, if you find yourself in need of stepping outside, make sure you look before you leap. This advice also applies to the moment when you want to take a rest and sit down. You do not want to have a close encounter with the “Mother in law cushion”

3. Wild life. Most of the animals within protected areas are quite used to human presence. A good way to get that once in a life time snapshot is by moving in slow motion so as to let the animal understand that you are not a predator. It is better to let the animals come to you and not the other way around. And please remember that it is not good to attract the animal by offering food.

Huemul

4. Hot drinks: there are few things that can compare to the pleasure of a hot drink after a 2 hour walk in Patagonia. Even during the summer, one should always carry some water to share a cup of chocolate or coffee and regain the necessary strength to move on to the next adventure. This is also a perfect way to meet other travellers.

5. Garbage. This breath taking area is still unspoiled and beautified by flowers, creeks, forests and snowed capped mountains. We will be tremendously grateful if you helped us keep nature garbage free. Over the years I have seen the strangest items turned into waste: sunglasses, hats, caps, jackets, and handkerchief. The reason is simple: the wind is so strong that can blow those items miles away.
