El Patio de mi casa Restaurant

One of the places that you can not miss in Puerto Varas is this tiny restaurant, but with an excellent cuisine.

The history is very peculiar, Claudio, the owner, used to sale seafood in the streets, then, started to prepare sealed meals for some companies around his house, meals which himself delivered. One good day his brother said to him,—- we should open a restaurant!!! —- Because this situation of delivering meals is going to “kill “us, why don’t we open a place and “force” our customers to come to us, instead of being delivering every meal ourselves.

Money was, of course, the main issue, but they could figure it out, and suddenly, they were constructing the restaurant at the same time they were repairing their house. Where? You might be asking. No Money for renting a place in downtown Puerto Varas, no money to buy another property—-then the answer is more than obvious, why don’t we open the doors of our own house?— Could be—- Why don’t we take advantage of the space in our house backyard? — That sounds great—- But, how the customers are going to see us, here?—Our customers will follow our food said Claudio.

That was exactly what happened, many people, know them already and follow their food, because is a balance of excellent quality with excellent value. For instance, for lunch this restaurant offers set menus, for around 5 dollars, so if your budget is not generous but you still want a treat, it is an excellent choice, they are open for dinner as well;  but with  ”a la carte” menu . Come to the “Backyard of my house “(El patio de mi Casa) Restaurant, actually, is still located in Claudio’s house backyard, which gives this restaurant a cosy environment in a very historical area of Puerto Varas.

Have you ever been in Petrohue wondering where should I eat?, at first sight, nothing seems to be reasonable just a Hotel there, which look very fancy, if you are one of the travelers who try to avoid fancy places at all cost, you will enjoy this advice.

On the beach of Lago todos los Santos Lake you will see some boats trying to sell a ride along the lake; one of those men is a great friend of our network his name is Alex Kuschel he live in a very nice house crossing the river , for a little cost you can arrange a nice meal or even rent a place for your pic-nic, Alex is an expert fly-fishing guide and he offers tours as well .

Happy Hour bar in Puerto Varas

Last night we went to taste a new place for “happy hour”…our curiosity took us to the recently inaugurated “Cumbres Patagonicas Hotel” in Puerto Varas, we are not the kind of people who likes hotels for this kind of distraction , even though, we decided to give it a try.

First of all, the view is simply impressive, facing the biggest lake in Chile “Llanquihue Lake” gives the Aracauria Bar a special touch, we tasted the “Cumbre Sour “which is a pisco sour but with honey produced near the ulmo trees which has a unique taste, plus a cinnamon touch and due to we are not the kind of people who drinks without a snack, we asked for a “Tapa Regional” with smoked cheeses, hams, local shellfish and comfits.

Let me tell you everything was simply great , the best of all the price was pretty much the average price of most of the bars even cheaper in Puerto Varas , for $ 3.750 Chilean Pesos ( around 7 dollars)  you can have two drinks included in the “Happy Hour” Menu such as:

Cumbres Sour

Amaretto Sour

Whisky Sour

Kir Royal

Mimosa

Caipirinha

Pisco Vodka

Rum

And one kind of beer “Cristal”

If you include a snack, for example, the “Tapa Regional” $3.600 Chilean Pesos, you can enjoy an excellent moment for around 20 dollars. Of course, dollars and credit cards are accepted. Happy Hour special prices are from Monday to Sunday  from 5:00pm to 09:00 pm

A couple months ago, one of my favourites TV shows come to my town, not only to Puerto Varas but, Santiago, Valparaiso, and Curico.

Tasting most of our typical food, the chef Anthony Bourdain took over our streets and tasted from ” completos ” to ” Terremotos”. Although there are some “over presented ” dishes and a few mistakes in the concept of what is typical on our food, the idea of the show was accomplished , to let the world know how well we eat in Chile also showing where you can enjoy yourself next time you visit our country.

1. Fuente Alemana : ( Santiago) If you are staying in Providencia neighbourhood this place is very close from you . Located in Pedro de Valdivia Street # 210, almost in the corner with 11 de Septiembre Avenue. Of course is not the only one, there is another one in ” Plaza Italia ” close to the subway station “Baquedano”. Our Reccommendation : try ” Lomito Completo” ( pork loin with tomatoes, avocado, mayonnaise , pickles, sauerkraut )

Donde el Gordito:  Definitely is one of my favourites in my town , Puerto Varas, you can taste a long variety of delicatessens , specially conger -eel with French fries and you must to taste ” Don Guillermo’s ” Pisco Sour” , Located in San Bernardo # 560 In front of “Santa Isabel ” supermarket in Puerto Varas  is a small place , but very cosy .
