It was a very rainy day in Puerto Varas, I decide to look for a shelter for a few minutes under the antique roof of the Municipal market, where among others stores there is one which is particularly beautiful, I decide to take a look inside and I found this wonderful work in metal and in wood , call my attention being such a nice art work I never saw it before, this sculptor creates this pieces with very small details and inspired in the local tourism activities such as : fly-fishing ; Rafting ; Rock Climbing ; etc .

La Casona de Campo.

Construcción con una hermosa vista al lago Llanquihue y sus volcanes, recrea las dependencias de familias alemanas que alcanzaron mejores comodidades a fines del siglo XIX. Fue construida con maderas nativas nobles como el roble, avellano, lingue, laurel, tepa, y coihué.

Casona de Campo

La primeras casas eran muy sencillas y de madera en bruto. La familia completa trabajaba en la tala y limpieza del terreno. Con el paso del tiempo la situación fue cambiando y la producción fue aumentando alcanzando niveles excedentarios que permitieron la edificación de magníficas residencias.

En su  interior encontramos distintas habitaciones que ilustran la vida cotidiana, doméstica y cultural de los colonos en períodos más avanzados de la colonización, dónde el intenso trabajo del campo se complementaba con otros aspectos de la vida social y costumbres germanas. Invitando a imaginar de un modo muy próximo la vida de estas familias. Cuenta con grandes salones, cocina, sala de música, un jardín de invierno, baños y dormitorios. Al estar en su interior podemos hacer un viaje  a través del tiempo e imaginar cómo era la vida de estas familias, tan lejos de su origen, sin comunicaciones, luz, agua,  comodidades que hacen nuestra vida actual más llevadera.

El Patio de mi casa Restaurant

One of the places that you can not miss in Puerto Varas is this tiny restaurant, but with an excellent cuisine.

The history is very peculiar, Claudio, the owner, used to sale seafood in the streets, then, started to prepare sealed meals for some companies around his house, meals which himself delivered. One good day his brother said to him,—- we should open a restaurant!!! —- Because this situation of delivering meals is going to “kill “us, why don’t we open a place and “force” our customers to come to us, instead of being delivering every meal ourselves.

Money was, of course, the main issue, but they could figure it out, and suddenly, they were constructing the restaurant at the same time they were repairing their house. Where? You might be asking. No Money for renting a place in downtown Puerto Varas, no money to buy another property—-then the answer is more than obvious, why don’t we open the doors of our own house?— Could be—- Why don’t we take advantage of the space in our house backyard? — That sounds great—- But, how the customers are going to see us, here?—Our customers will follow our food said Claudio.

That was exactly what happened, many people, know them already and follow their food, because is a balance of excellent quality with excellent value. For instance, for lunch this restaurant offers set menus, for around 5 dollars, so if your budget is not generous but you still want a treat, it is an excellent choice, they are open for dinner as well;  but with  ”a la carte” menu . Come to the “Backyard of my house “(El patio de mi Casa) Restaurant, actually, is still located in Claudio’s house backyard, which gives this restaurant a cosy environment in a very historical area of Puerto Varas.

Just 2 Hours of Puerto Varas we can find the cove of Puñihuil where 3 islets give us the chance to appreciate 2 kinds of penguins: Humboldt and Magellan. Tours are available from Puerto Varas, almost in every agency, but you have to consider a few points prior your visit:

Puñihuil Islet with 5 points route

1. Penguins arrive at the end of September till last days of March
2. December , January you can see the offspring
3. Is a 2 and a half hours one way to see just 20 minutes of penguins
4. Boats takes people into the islet but you can’t get off of the boats
5. Boats start to operate from 10:00 a.m., before that, they don’t disturb the penguin feeding time.
6. Departures of the boats are every 15 minutes, full capacity, so you might have to wait.
7. Although 98% of the time the visit can be done, there is 2 % where is impossible for weather conditions.
8. Since 2009 the visits will be limited, so don’t go there without a reservation.
9. The boat ride for 2009 would cost $ 5000 Chilean pesos.
10. A lot of wild life could be seen besides penguins, Cormorants, Gulls, Otters, Sea lions, Steamer ducks, and Kelp goose among others.
