Spending some hour in a Patagonian forest can be a life time experience. The problem seems to be the time that travellers need to invest in order to listen the birds, smell the flowers or simply contemplate nature.
Fortunately, there is place not far from Punta Arenas where wild life awaits. An unspoiled area known as “Reserva Forestal Magallanes”. Created in 1939, this reservation aims to maintain the natural beauty of the Lynch Lagoon basin, with all its resources, flora and fauna.
Reserva Forestal Magallanes has hikes for everybody. This includes a flat 20 minute walk to a look out point, to a full day adventure. Therefore, I advice you to speak with the ranger so as to know all the possibilities and make the best of this adventure.
The reservation has picnic and camping areas with sheds, toilets for all those who want to spend more than a few hours or even a day. The policy of CONAF* is to include all those who enjoy fresh air, for that reason they have a path specially designed for physically challenged visitors with signs that give the names of the vegetation. Just remember that there are no stores near by, so make sure you take all the water and food you need before hand.
There is no regular transportation system to the “reserva”, but here is a tip in case you feel like moving a little before sitting on a plane.
